When Your Work Starts to Feel Like You

A few weeks ago, I wrote about women in midlife who are trying to figure out what comes next. I’ve been thinking about that again because, for the first time, I understand why some entrepreneurs become workaholics.

I’ve overworked plenty of times before, usually because of stress, loyalty, obligation, or feeling responsible for making sure the work was done and the team was cohesive. But this feels completely different.

Lately, I’m having trouble pulling myself away from the work because I’m so excited about what I’m building. Ideas wake me up early in the morning. I keep thinking of one more thing I want to plan, write, create, or talk through. I feel almost giddy, which is not a word I normally use.

I couldn’t have predicted this exact version of my work a few years ago. It has grown from coaching, teaching, mental fitness, moving abroad, helping new arrivals, traveling independently, facilitating groups, and paying attention to which parts gave me the most energy.

Those things probably looked like separate interests or like I’m headed in 10 different directions, but I see how they all fit together and point to one thing: helping people feel more confident, supported, and able to create a life that is right for them.

What Your Energy May Be Telling You

There can be so much pressure in midlife to figure out who you are now and what purpose you want in this next phase. We assume that because we have experience and a little more wisdom, the answer should be obvious. I thought mine was, but I had to try things, change directions, return to strengths I had overlooked, and gather experiences I didn’t know would inspire me.

Maybe you don’t know what comes next because you’re still gathering evidence. That doesn’t mean there isn’t an answer. Pay attention to what people trust you with and what gives you energy. The answer may be forming right in front of you.
