What It Feels Like to Be Truly Heard

It is striking how refreshing it can feel when someone truly cares about what you are saying and feeling and responds with real presence and thoughtfulness.

I was talking to a friend recently, and I felt this warmth and surprise at how fully present she was with me in the moment. It made me realize how novel that felt.

Why Full Presence Is Rare

Of course, my friends listen and respond to me. I think so many of us are mentally overloaded, distracted, or worried about making someone uncomfortable that we often show up with 70 or 80% of our attention instead of the full 100, or we hold back when we want to say more.

I thanked her for really listening, for thinking about what I was saying, and for responding with so much care. I could feel how much she meant it.

Going Beyond the Surface

She then told me that people sometimes think she is too intense because she goes beyond the surface and talks about deeper things. I loved that.

A lot of conversation stays in safer territory, but I enjoy digging deeper too. I just hope that comes across as care and curiosity, not an interrogation. Haha.

When someone brings that kind of attention to a conversation, it feels like such a gift.
