You Don’t Need to Be the Expert to Lead Well

A lot of people hold themselves back because they believe they need to be the expert in order to lead something well.

A couple of recent conversations with friends and colleagues helped me rethink that.

They helpfully reminded me: what if the value is not in knowing everything but in how you guide people through the experience? The content may be the same, but the person leading it changes the entire experience.

What People Actually Need From You

It reminds me a bit of management. Yes, you want a manager who understands your work, but when someone is too focused on being the expert, they can end up doing the work rather than actually managing people well.

What we usually need more is empathy, confidence, judgment, and someone we trust to help navigate problems.

It’s About the Experience You Create

I think training can be similar. Yes, content matters. Preparation matters. But so do presence, curiosity, warmth, facilitation, and the ability to help people engage with what they are learning.

I think that applies far beyond training. Whether you are managing a team, facilitating a meeting, or presenting an idea, what we often remember is how the experience felt. Many people are looking more for the person who can guide, engage, and create trust in the room than for the person with every answer.

Reflection Question: What do you bring to the room that people may value more than you realize?
